Infantry Assault Badge

Infantry Assault Badge
(Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen)

The infantry assault badge was instituted on December 20, 1939 to single out the combat participation of officers and men of the Infantry and Mountain Infantry.  Award for the badge could take place for actions occurring on or after January 1, 1940.

Criteria for the award specified that the recipient take part in at least three infantry assaults, armed reconnaissance, engage in hand-to-hand combat or participate in the restoration of the combat line on three different days.

The Infantry Assault Badge was designed by the firm C.E. Junker in Berlin.  It was

composed of an oak leak wreath with the national emblem and a rifle with bayonet affixed.  The badge was worn on the lower left breast on all uniform tunics.
